The Railways have bestowed its largesse on Nilambur station by sanctioning many facilities, including a new train for Onam and an extended platform with long roofing.
General Manager of the Southern Railway M.S. Jayant visited the Nilambur station on Saturday and ordered installation of facilities in tune with the demands made by the people of Nilambur. Development work to the tune of Rs.1 crore will soon be taken up at Nilambur.
Nilambur will have a new booking office with more ticket counters to avoid crowding. The existing approach road to the station will be extended to connect Karulai-Nilambur Road.
Mr. Jayant, after examining the station premises, ordered that the Divisional Scouts Camp building lying in disuse be converted to a Rail Kalyanamandapam.
The existing platform will be raised and lengthened to accommodate 18 coaches. It will also have a lengthened roofing.
Mr. Jayant, accompanied by P.V. Abdul Wahab, MP,Aryadan Showkath,Railway Action Council office bearers and a large contingent of Railway officials from Chennai and Palakkad, promised that colour light signalling work would be completed in three months.
The station yard will be strengthened with concrete sleepers. Addressing the woes of passengers coming from the western side, a foot over-bridge will be constructed and there will be a ticket counter at the entrance to the bridge.
A touch-screen kiosk will be set up, and new toilets constructed at the station.
The train from Nilambur to Ernakulam will be renamed as Nilambur-Ernakulam Passenger. Currently the train leaves Nilambur at 2.20 p.m. as 640 Shoranur Passenger. From Shoranur, it proceeds to Ernakulam as 649 Shoranur- Ernakulam Passenger.
The proposed evening train from Nilambur will be started as an Onam special, said Mr. Jayant.
The track work between Melattur and Shoranur will be expedited and the speed on this section will be increased from 65 kmph to 75 kmph.
Mr. Jayant interacted with the local people and took note of the problems they faced at the station.

The train No. 672 Nilambur Road - Shoranur Junction passenger special will be run to the existing timings and stoppages of train No. 644 Nilambur – Palakkad Junction passenger between Nilambur Road and Shoranur.
Consequently Train No. 644 Nilambur Road – Palakkad Junction Passenger will be rescheduled to leave Nilambur Road at 19:30 hrs (instead of 17:00 hrs at present) and arrive Palakkad Junction at 22:55 hrs (Instead of 21:20 hrs at present).
